Use Trackunit Manager to Prevent & Manage Asset Theft

Learn how to use Trackunit Manager to stop theft before it happens—with alerts, usage boundaries, and recovery reports.

Updated this week

Equipment theft is costly and disruptive — and simply installing an IoT device isn’t enough. To truly protect your assets, you need to make sure you are utilizing the right features in Trackunit Manager.

The core features of Trackunit Manager that should be your go-to when wanting to prevent theft are, Sites, Site-based Theft Alerts, Movement-based Theft Alerts, Incident Reports and Asset Home. Let's have a look at these features one by one:

Sites

Sites will give you an up-to-the-minute view of asset location within a specific site (geofenced areas) — wether that be a depot, a construction site, workplace or general area. Combined with Site-based Theft Alerts, you can use Sites for theft prevention management.

Site-based Theft Alerts

Set up a Site-based Theft Alert to be notified when assets move outside a site boundary to prevent unauthorized use of assets or theft. If something moves outside of the boundary, you know.

💡 Tip: Use Groups to simplify alert setup

Instead of assigning alerts to machines one by one, create custom groups — like “Site A Excavators” or “North Yard Fleet” — and apply Site-based Theft Alerts to the whole group at once. It’s a fast, scalable way to keep your geofencing strategy organized as your fleet grows or shifts.

Movement-based Theft Alerts

Movement-based Theft Alerts allow you to define specific working hours and get notified if an asset moves outside of those times. Whether it's being loaded onto a trailer at midnight or used outside of rental contract hours, you'll know — and can take action.

💡 Tip: Combine both alerts for smarter coverage

The best protection comes from layering Site-based and Movement-based Theft Alerts. Together, they help you catch both unexpected location changes and suspicious out-of-hours usage.

Incident Report

Despite all preventive measures, assets can still be stolen, and accidents can still occur. By reacting swiftly and diligently, recovery is possible in such events. You can generate incident reports with GPS breadcrumb trails showing where the asset has traveled — complete with timestamps and locations.

These reports can be exported and shared directly with law enforcement, recovery teams, or insurance providers.

Movement tab in Asset Home

Knowing the location of an asset at a particular point in time is important when checking up on routes, arrival times, or potential theft. Use the Movement tab in Asset home to track the exact location of a particular asset.

Using these combinations gives you the very best that Trackunit has to offer in terms of safe-guarding your assets.
