Understanding your Emissions Data

Learn where your emissions data comes from, what affects it, and how to make sense of what you see.

Do I have access to emissions data?

Emissions tracking is available if your account is on the Expand or Leap package, or has the Emissions Add-on enabled. All assets visible to eligible accounts are automatically included.

Where can I see emissions data?

There are two places to view emissions:

  • In the Emissions Reporting app: shows daily CO2 emissions for your fleet and assets.

  • Insights tab in Asset Home: shows a running cumulative total over time.

Both draw on the same underlying data, but they process it slightly differently (see Why do the Emissions Reporting app and Insights show different numbers?)

How are emissions calculated?

It depends on the device fitted to your asset:

  • Some devices report emissions directly and the platform uses those values as they come in.

  • For devices that don't report emissions directly, the platform calculates them from other signals from the device, such as fuel consumption, engine hours, and operating hours.

What happens when I add a new asset?

Once an asset is active on your account, it will start appearing in the Insights tab. A few things to know:

  • Tracking begins from the date the asset is first added to your account. Historical data before that date is not included.

  • Cumulative emissions totals start from that onboarding date and build from there.

What happens if an asset is transferred to another account?

Emissions tracking only applies while an asset is on an eligible account. If an asset moves to an account without access to Emissions Reporting, tracking pauses and any emissions during that period won't be included. If the asset later returns to an eligible account, tracking resumes from that point. The gap is not backfilled.

Why do the Emissions Reporting app and Insights show different numbers?

This is expected. The main reason they can differ:

  • The Emissions Reporting app recalculates the full history on every update. So if something changes — like a device's specifications — it's applied retroactively across all past data.

  • The Insights tab only calculates forward from each update. It doesn't reprocess past values.

There's also a difference in how buffered data is handled. If a device goes offline for a period and then reports a large catch-up value, the Emissions Reporting app spreads that data back across the missing days. The Insights tab adds it on the day it was received.

In practice, these differences are usually small and will converge over time.

Does the platform account for late or delayed data?

Yes. Emissions totals are recalculated on a regular schedule. If a device was offline and later syncs, or if data arrives late, the totals will update to reflect the most current information available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see emissions for assets I recently added? Yes. Once an asset is active and your account is eligible, it will appear in the Insights tab. Data is not backfilled prior to the tracking start date.

Why did my cumulative total change? Cumulative totals can update when new device data arrives or when late-reported data is processed. This is normal and reflects the most accurate information available.

Can I calculate daily emissions from the Insights tab? Yes. You can derive daily figures by looking at the difference in the cumulative total between consecutive days.
