What is the Data Source Score in Emissions Reporting?

Learn about how the Data Source Score can help you improve the data that is used to calculate emissions, and how you can improve the score.

Updated over a week ago

The Data Source Score represents the quality of data inputs used to calculate emissions for assets in your fleet. A higher score reflects more reliable and accurate emissions data.

This article explains:

  • What data affects the score

  • Where to find the score

  • How to improve the score

What data is used?

The score is based on a combination of time-series data and asset metadata, depending on the type of connection your asset has.

For assets with CAN connections and those connected via OEM API feeds, any of the following data inputs are available:

  • CO2 Emissions

  • Fuel Usage

  • Fuel Level

  • Fuel Rate

  • Electricity Usage

  • Engine Hours

  • Operating Hours

For assets with 3-wire IoT device installations, the following time-series data point is available:

  • Operating Hours (via Advanced Configuration)

For all assets, any of the following metadata is available:

  • Machine Type

  • Model

  • Brand

  • Power Type

Where can I view the Data Source Score for each asset?

You can locate the Date Source Score in the Emissions Reporting app:

  1. In the Data Scoring tab

  2. In the Data Source Score column under Fleet Emissions and Trends tabs

  3. In the Data Source Score column, in exported reports

Data Source Score Overview

Below is a detailed breakdown of how the scores are determined based on the combined time-series data and asset metadata provided:

How can I improve the Data Source Score?

The Data Source Score measures the quality and completeness of data coming from your asset. A higher score means better insights and reporting accuracy.

Depending on your asset’s current score, you can take specific actions to improve it.

The two main actions to improve a Data Source Score

  1. Providing more asset metadata

  2. If the asset is CAN-capable:

    • Connecting to the asset via CAN

    • Applying a CAN profile that reports one of the time series data points listed in the table above

Exemplary scenarios showing how to improve a Data Source Score:

Scenario

Action taken

Score improvement

An asset reports only Operating Hours or Engine Hours, but has no other metadata defined

Specifying Brand and Model for that asset

From “Very Low” to “Medium”

An asset has a Data Source Score of “Medium” but is capable of reporting Fuel Usage via CAN

Applying a CAN profile that reports the datapoint Fuel Usage

From "Medium" to "Excellent"

An asset has a Data Source Score of “High”, because it reports Fuel Rate via CAN

Specifying the asset’s Fuel Tank Capacity

From "High" to "Excellent"

💡 Tip: Filter reports to capture assets missing metadata

Using the Fleet Emissions tab and filter dropdowns (type, brand, model). If a value is missing, the asset will be labelled as "Undefined".

We recommend to filter by Undefined to find assets with missing metadata. Click on each asset to open its specification page where you can update metadata to improve the Data Source Score.
