What is the Data Source Score in Emissions Reporting?

Learn about how the Data Source Score can help you improve the data that is used to calculate emissions, and how you can improve the score.

Updated this week

The Data Source Score represents the quality of data inputs used to calculate emissions for assets in a fleet, and recommendations for ways to improve the score to get the most accurate emissions numbers.

What data is used?

In order of quality, the following data sources (if available) are factored to calculate the Data Source Score

For assets with CAN connections and those connected via OEM API feeds, any of the following data inputs are available:

  • CO2 emissions

  • Fuel Usage

  • Fuel Rate

  • Electric Power

  • Electricity Usage

For assets with 3-wire IoT device installs, any of the following time-series data points are available:

  • Engine Hours

  • Operating Hours

For all assets, any of the following metadata is available:

  • Machine Type

  • Model

  • Brand

  • Power Type

Where can I view the Data Source Score for each asset?

You can locate the Date Source Score in the Emissions Reporting app:

  1. In the Data Source Score column in the main emissions dashboard

  2. In the Data Source Score column, in report exports

  3. In the Data Scoring tab

What actions can I take to improve the Data Source Score?

Depending on the Data Source Score, you have the option to improve by either providing more asset metadata or by changing the connection type. See the detailed scoring overview below which details actions that can be taken to improve the Data Source Score.

Scoring Overview

Data Source Score

Connection type and time series data

Actions

Excellent

CAN or OEM API feed, which includes:

  • CO2 emissions

  • Fuel Usage

  • Electricity Usage

Congratulations! The best possible score has been achieved and no action is required.

Very High

CAN or OEM API feed, which includes:

  • Fuel Rate

  • Electric Power

To achieve an Excellent score, change the type of data connection to one reporting:

  • CO2

  • Fuel Usage

  • Electricity Usage

High

Non-CAN:

  • Engine Hours

To achieve a Very High score, change the type of connection for the asset from Non-CAN to a CAN-enabled connection reporting:

  • Fuel Rate

  • Electric Power

Medium

Non-CAN:

  • Operating Hours

To achieve a High score, change the type of asset connection to one reporting:

  • Engine Hours

Low

Non-CAN:

  • Operating Hours

To achieve a Medium score, improve the asset metadata score by providing:

  • Model

  • Brand

  • Power Type

Very Low

Non-CAN:

  • Operating Hours

To achieve a Low score, improve the asset metadata score by providing:

  • Machine Type

💡 Tip: Filter reports to capture assets missing metadata

Using the fleet emissions tab, each filter dropdown (type, brand, model) can be selected, and if a value is not included then the asset will be labelled as Undefined.

If you filter by Undefined, you will see a list of assets missing metadata. Each asset can be clicked to detail the specification page where you can enter metadata to improve the Data Source Score.
