How do I replace a device, and what happens to historical data?

Learn how to replace a defective or old device and still keep the data and most settings from your old device.

Updated this week

When replacing device, it’s important to understand which data will be carried over to the new device, and which will not.

In most cases, historical data is preserved — as long as the new device is installed on the existing asset.

Transferred data based on device type:

The data transferred when you replace a device depends on the type of device being replaced. The table below provides an overview of which data is transferred for Raw devices, Spot devices, and Kin tags.

Replacing Raw and Spot devices

Note: In order to replace a Raw or Spot device, a user needs to have admin rights for the entire fleet. If you are using Manager Classic, make sure to also grant the user "updating rights under the module settings".

As an admin, you can update this in your Administration page --> Users

When you have removed the old device and installed the new device

  1. Go to verify.trackunit.com and search the serial number of the old device

    • Important: Take note of the serial number as you need it to cancel the subscription for the device after it’s been replaced

  2. Click Replace in the top right corner

  3. In the Device replacement window enter the serial number of the new device and click Next

  4. Make sure that both serial numbers are correct - a replacement cannot be undone

  5. Click Confirm to complete the replacement. It can take up to 20 seconds for the data to be transferred

Note: you still need to cancel the subscription for the old device after you replace it. See how to cancel a subscription here

Replacing Kin Tags

There is no process for replacing Kin tags. When a Kin tag runs out of battery, you must install a new Kin tag and set it up anew.
