Why does a transfer or visibility request require OEM authorisation?

Learn why you might need a written OEM authorization for making transfer or visbility requests.

When you attempt to transfer an asset or share visibility with another account, you may encounter a block or error indicating that OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) authorisation is required. This article explains why this happens and how to resolve it.

What is OEM authorisation?

Some assets in Trackunit are registered to, or provisioned through, an OEM account. The OEM retains certain rights over devices they manufacture or provision, including control over where those devices can be transferred or who can access visibility of them.

Because of this, Trackunit requires written confirmation from the OEM before processing a transfer or visibility change that involves an OEM-registered device. This requirement exists to comply with GDPR and to protect data ownership boundaries between OEM accounts and their customers.

When is OEM authorisation required?

  • You are transferring an asset that is registered to or provisioned under an OEM account

  • You are sharing visibility of a device where the OEM is the current owner

  • You are requesting to receive visibility of a device that belongs to an OEM account outside your hierarchy

  • The source and recipient accounts have an OEM/customer relationship in Trackunit Manager

How to get OEM authorisation

  1. Identify the OEM account associated with the device (your Trackunit account manager or support agent can help confirm this)

  2. Contact the OEM directly and ask them to provide written confirmation that the transfer or visibility change is approved

  3. Include the serial number(s) of the device(s) and the target account name in the confirmation

  4. Forward the OEM's written confirmation to Trackunit Support, along with your transfer or visibility request

Tip: If you are an OEM account admin yourself, you can approve the request directly via the Ownership & Visibility tab in Trackunit Manager Administration.

What if the OEM cannot be reached?

If you are unable to obtain OEM confirmation, Trackunit Support cannot process the transfer or visibility change on your behalf. In this case, we recommend escalating within your own organisation or contacting the OEM through your commercial relationship (e.g. your equipment dealer or manufacturer's customer service).
