How to change device Operating Modes

Set up the desired Operating Mode of your devices to maximize battery life under certain circumstances.

Updated over a week ago

You need to have an Admin or Fleet Admin role to use the Administration app in Trackunit Manager.

Admins must be logged in to Trackunit Manager with an account that is having primary ownership of the device, in order to change the device Operating Modes.

What Operating Modes are available?

The Operation Modes below are currently only available to Trackunit Raw devices.

All TU700 devices will support all Operating Modes.

TU600 and TU50X devices will be limited, but they support some Operating Modes as long as they are on a firmware version greater than or equal to 63.08. If your device is not using the appropriate firmware version you will need to upgrade before you can use this feature.

Mode

Description

Detail

Suggested Uses

Normal

The default Operating Mode, configured for an optimized balance between power consumption and reporting frequency regardless of asset operation.

Your device will communicate at a steady rate when external power is stable. If the power supply starts to weaken, the device will automatically adjust its communication frequency to save power and extend battery life.

All normal operation.

Stock

The Operating Mode configured for stock asset, reducing reporting frequency to twice per day or when the equipment is moving in favor of battery life when the asset is not in operation.

Your device will communicate at a steady rate when external power is stable and the asset is operating.

If the asset is not operating, the device will automatically adjust its communication frequency to twice per day to save power and extend battery life.

If movement is detected from the on-board accelerometer the device will also wake up and report.

Long-term asset storage.

Transport

The Operating Mode configured for transportation, reducing reporting frequency to once per day in favor of battery life when the asset is not in operation.

Your device will communicate at a steady rate when external power is stable and the asset is operating. If the asset is not operating, the device will automatically adjust its communication frequency to once a day to save power and extend battery life.

Asset shipping/transportation, where access to asset battery is inconvenient.

Restricted

The Operating Mode for safety, only powering on the device when your asset is being used.

Your device will communicate at a steady rate when external power is stable and the asset is operating.

If the asset is not operating, the device will halt all communication to save power and extend battery life. and stay compliant in areas requiring additional safety in the form of a complete shut down.

Safety-critical situations where total shutdown of electronics is required when the asset is not operating.

How do I change and manage Operating Modes?

The default Operating Mode for the Trackunit Raw is always the “Normal” mode. It is the optimal choice for most situations unless there are specific requirements for long term storage or safety. In typical operating or storage situations for assets, this mode is sufficient.

If you decide you would like to change the Operating Mode of your device(s), there are three ways to do so:

  1. In Trackunit Manager

  2. With Trackunit APIs

    1. REST

    2. GraphQL

  3. Using Verify

Changing Operating Modes in Trackunit Manager

Within Trackunit Manager, you can change the Operation Mode of your device by using either the Asset app or the Administration app.

Using the Asset app

This is the easiest way to apply Operating Modes changes to a single device.

  1. Sign in to Trackunit Manager.

  2. Click on the Asset app in the left side menu

  3. Find the asset with the device you want to edit, and click on it.

  4. Select the Telematics tab on the left side sub-menu.

  5. Scroll to the Operating Mode section.

  6. Select your desired Operating Mode, then select Save.

Saving the Operating Mode means that it is queued to be applied to your device. If you would like to see the status for applying these changes, see “Using the Administration app” below.

Using the Administration app

This is the easiest way to apply Operating Mode changes to mulitple devices.

  1. Sign in to Trackunit Manager.

  2. Go to the Administration app on the left side menu.

  3. Select the Devices tab on the left side sub-menu.

  4. Select the devices you would like to configure (you can select more than one device at a time if you are changing them into the same Operating Mode) by ticking them off in the white box next to the Serial Number.

  5. Click Configure in the blue bar at the bottom of the screen.

  6. Click the Operating Mode icon, then click Next.

  7. Select your desired Operating Mode, then click Next.

  8. Review the settings you have selected.

  9. If everything looks good, click Configure in the bottom right corner

Note: In the Review page, you will see a column named “Remarks”. The Remarks column will let you know if there are any issues with your selection:

  • Supported: The device and the Operating Mode is compatible and you can go ahead with the configuration.

  • Not Supported: You have either chosen a device that is not a Raw device, or your device is not running on the latest firmware. Read here how to check the firmware version of your device, and how to update it if needed.

  • Not allowed: You are not logged into the account that has primary ownership of the asset. Contact your account admin for more information.

After configuration, a notification will appear in the bottom right corner, confirming that your settings have been applied in Trackunit Manager.

Meanwhile, the Operating Mode column will show "Pending" until the settings are successfully applied to the device. Once the process is complete, the "Pending" status will disappear.

Changing your Operating Modes via API

To change Operating Modes via API, leverage the instructions inside of the Trackunit Developer Hub. See the Update desired state page for more details.

Changing your Operating Modes using Verify

If you are an installer using Verify, you can change the Operating Mode of a device directly from Verify.

  1. Go to Verify

  2. Enter the Serial Number of your device and click Find

  3. Scroll to the section titled Operating Mode and change the mode here.

  4. Select “Save” and the change is queued to be applied to your device.

In order to confirm that the Operating Mode has been changed, you have to use the Administration app in Trackunit Manager. See this section of the article
